Hi! I don't think you remember me but we talked at Gigacon. I'm the young girl who asked you about what college I should go to for graphic art design and how to start my art career in graphic novels. And you told me I should start with storyboarding or logo design. I was surprised to find you here on DA.^^

I hope you are doing well and you have really widen my view on my career.=)

Hey! This is Marty (the guy who looks like your friend from SCAD...Dallas...?). It was great meeting and talking with you yesterday. I didn't get a chance to sign up for the portfolio reviews, but if you get a chance it'd be awesome if you could skim through my gallery here and let me know what you think.

You know...if you feel like it...

Thanks!

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.

I had a great time visiting your school.

After looking through your gallery, I can see a lot of potential, I do think some areas that need focus is 1) Structure, and 2) Lighting which will be informed by you application of structure.

It is o.k. to reference life to help capture it in your art, don't be afraid to put the time in your work, your future will thank you for it.

Keep in touch

Sam

Thanks for the input. What do you mean by structure? Anatomy? Construction? I'll assume both for now, haha.

But yeah, I'll definitely be doing more life drawing.

Thanks again,
Marty

This is in noway to sound dick'ish, but my use of structure will encompass both anatomy and construction, MAC's handy dictionary tool defines anatomy:
•anatomy |əˈnatəmē| (abbr.: anat.)
noun ( pl. -mies)
the branch of science concerned with the bodily structure of humans, animals, and other living organisms, esp. as revealed by dissection and the separation of parts.

and I like the latter description being:
• figurative a study of the structure or internal workings of something : Machiavelli's anatomy of the art of war.

I use structure to focus on your over all working method.
Anatomy tells use the FORM dictates FUNCTION, Construction is how we apply the use of our anatomy knowledge.

You don't have to draw things that you don't want, just make sure the things you draw work in the world you create them in, granted for you audience to get your intent without an explanation you will have to use conventions which they are already informed with, such as, this is an arm it bends like an arm, just like the one you have, unless they don't have arms, in the which you don't want them looking at you stuff anyways…

Any who, look at the way you approach your next drawing, and thing of all the things you want to show and have understood by you audience right away and then make sure every line, shape, form, color, and value support that.

Walt Stachfield just put out 2 books called "Drawn to Life", get them from amazon they are awesome, he died back in 2000, was an old disney artist that gave out weekly handouts, they are amazing.

Nice Freakazoid BTW.

Keep in touch,

Sam
